If the patient who will have a breast prosthesis is over 40 years old, before the surgery, radiological examinations called mammography and if necessary, ultrasonography is performed. Every surgery has general or specific risks. Edema and pain in the breast area are postoperative complaints. Surgery-related bleeding and infection are rare conditions. Some patients complain of increased or decreased sensitivity in the nipples after surgery or numbness around the incision. This is usually temporary. It has been suggested that some connective tissue diseases develop in the body against the prosthesis, which is a foreign body, it becomes difficult to give milk to the baby, and the prosthesis causes cancer. However, none of these have been scientifically proven. In breast augmentation surgery, since a foreign substance is supplied to the body to augment the breast, there may be problems related to the prosthesis. There may be hardening and tightening due to the development of a membrane called a capsule around the prosthesis. The thin membrane does not cause any problems. In case a medium thickness membrane forms, a slight hardness in the breasts and prominence on the base of the breast can be noticed. In rare cases, the body may not accept this foreign substance. It tries to form a thick membrane (capsule) around the prosthesis, compress and incarcerate it and sometimes throw it out of the body. If a thick capsule is formed, hardness and sometimes asymmetry can be seen in the breasts. In case of mild and moderate capsular contracture, external massage and additional surgeries can be performed when necessary to remove the capsule around the prosthesis.
When severe capsular contracture occurs, there is no alternative but to remove the prosthesis. Although the outer surface of silicone prostheses is very thin, it is very resistant to external impacts. Normal and medium massages do not harm. The person can lie face down 2 months after the operation. Sometimes, leakage of the prosthesis content outside the balloon can be seen. If a gel-filled prosthesis is used, these substances leaking into the tissue gaps may cause mass formation. It is not yet known how soy oil has an impact. If a prosthesis filled with serum is used, the serum filled into the prosthesis may leak out of the prosthesis, into the tissue gaps. In this case, the serum that leaks out is quickly absorbed by the tissues without any harm to the body. This substance, which can normally be administered intravenously and used for other therapeutic purposes, has no harm. Rupture of the prosthesis is a rare occurrence; it can occur in vehicle traffic accidents, as well as from jams, falls from heights, and penetrating injuries. Mammography and surgical examination to be performed later on breasts with prostheses do not cause any problems. The prosthesis is seen as a gap in mammography. The risk of developing cancer in a breast with silicone breast prosthesis does not increase, it is the same as normal breast tissue. When such a situation occurs, surgery and other treatment methods for cancer are applied in line with the standards in the prosthetic breast. Before deciding on breast augmentation surgery, you should clearly tell your doctor your bothering defect and your expectation from the surgery, and discuss with your doctor the prosthesis to be chosen, from which incision the prosthesis will be placed, the type of anesthesia, early and late results of the surgery.

The period after augmentation mammoplasty surgery is usually comfortable. Pain is minimal. If the prosthesis is placed behind the breast muscle, there may be a limitation in arm movements for a few days. After the operation, a bra or bandage is applied to the breast. If there are stitches that do not dissolve, they can be removed after 10-12 days. There is no need to remove stitches dissolving. There may be swelling in the early period, numbness in the nipple and purplish discoloration on the skin. These disappear spontaneously in a short time. The patient can return to work within 3-4 days. The prosthesis is placed in its place 3 weeks after the operation and the breast regains its normal function. The patient is recommended to stay away from heavy sports (requiring jumping-running) for 2 months. Prosthetic breast augmentation surgery is an operation that generally gives good and permanent results, improves the mental health and psychosocial structure of the person, and makes the person more connected to life. Today, the most common use of silicone gel-filled, textured round prostheses are used. Prosthesis selection and placement may vary depending on the patient, the condition of the breast and the surgeon's preference.

Breast augmentation can be performed by taking a fat graft from any part of the body with the liposuction method and injecting it to the breast for augmentation and shaping. It is not a highly preferred method because of the dissolving of most of the adipose tissue and the formation of asymmetries and therefore the possibility of requiring repetitive procedures.
